Facts on PSP Battery Life

The PSP Original, PSP Slim, PSP 3000 and PSP Go Models.
Basically when you compare the PSP battery life of the 1000 , 2000 ,3000 and the PSP Go systems they appear to have equivalent play times. When the slim & lite was released onto the market, it did not appear to live up to the expectations placed upon it’s expected battery life (from fully charged to flat).
Since the PSP slim and the 3000 system uses battery power more economically, it was fitted with a 1200mAh battery 1/3 smaller than the 1800mAh battery used in the original model. The PSP Go has a battery rated at 930mAh.

Approximate game play 3 – 6 hours.
Approximate video play back 3 – 5 hours
Approximate music play time up to 10 hours * See Music *.

Increasing PSP Slim Battery Life. (Play time)
If you are for fortunate to have an original PSP battery from the original 1000 model or able to buy the 1800mAh battery to fit into your slim. This battery will fit, but requires a larger replacement battery cover to fully enclose the battery compartment on the slim. This bulges out of the back of the slim, but effectively increases the playtime of the slim. The AC charging adaptor provided with the slim will also charge the 1800mAh battery.

Approximate Game Play Time 4 – 8 hours.
Approximate Video Play Back 4 – 7 hours.

There is an Extended Life Battery Kit  introduced by Sony. This battery is rated at 2200mAh and is compatible with the 1000, 2000 and 3000 systems. This battery has received great customer reviews and is rated highly compared with other brands, that don’t deliver. This will extend the previously stated play times. But at the moment is currently unavailable.

A selection of quality PSP batteries specifically made for the Playstation portable 1000, 2000 and 3000 models.

Other Factors to Consider.

There are many other factors that you must take into consideration when trying to determine the battery life of the PSP (between charges).

The use of the wifi feature drains the battery much faster than playing games or viewing movie play back. The PSP battery life when using the wifi feature is rated at approximately 2 – 2-1/2 hours.
The playing of UMD games or UMD movie playback ultimately uses more battery power, than playing from a memory stick.
The more graphically intense a game is, or the more data the system has to process will ultimately drain the battery faster. For example games like Grand Theft Auto or Ridge Racers.
Always make sure the wifi or UMD features are switched off,if not in use.

Screen Brightness and Volume Settings.
Screen brightness and volume settings also have an effect on the duration of the charge in the battery.
The Playstation portable has 3 brightness settings – the brightest being 180 cd/m2, medium 130 cd/m2 and the lowest setting of 80 cd/m2. By adjusting the screen brightness, this will drain less power from your battery.*If full brightness is not required*.
Even the volume level settings impact on the battery life (charge). For example if the volume setting was at 50% it uses less power than at 100%

Listening to Songs on PSP.
When listening to songs on PSP through MP3 playback, the battery will last a lot longer if the wifi, UMD, and backlight are switched off.
The back light can easily be switched off by pressing the display button for more than 1 second. The back light is easily reactivated by pressing any button on your portable.
Another factor for the portable user to take into consideration are the use of head phones, as they use less power than listening to your songs through the systems speakers.
You could expect to enjoy listening to your songs from a memory stick for up to 10 hours or longer.

The PSP Battery Life Span.                                                                                                                     The PSP battery pack will eventually have to be replaced, as it has a limited life span. The run time of the battery will decrease slightly each time it is charged. Eventually after repeated usage and the age of the battery pack, the battery will not retain it’s charge for long. This is a good sign that it’s time to replace your PlayStation battery.

Other factors can also impact on the battery life span such as temperature, conditions of use and how the battery is stored.
Information from other sources estimate that the psp battery life span could be expected to last *1000 full cycles*. A cycle is each time the battery is charged from nearly flat or flat then recharged.
It is not recommended to continually charge the devices battery from completely flat, as this could potentially shorten the life of the battery.

Battery Charge Indicator.
On the PSP screen there is a battery charge indicator, this shows how much charge is remaining on your device. The indicator is divided into 3 sections indicating level of charge.

When 3 sections are lit, the battery has 67% – 100% power.
2 sections are lit, the battery has 33% – 67% power.
1 section only lit, the battery has 33% – 1% power.

Important: When the power indicator begins to flash green while you’re enjoying a game,it is important to save your game progress and recharge the battery pack. If you don’t save your game progress before the battery pack runs out, your game progress will be lost.

Sleep Mode.
When the Playstation portable is placed into sleep mode it uses very little battery power. Current reports suggest that when the PSP is in sleep mode it uses less than 1 % of battery power.
