The PlayStation Portable 2000 (slim and lite), PSP 3000, PSP Go (N1000), PSP E1000 and the new PS Vita model *(please see note) presents an extra charging option for the user, this being the ability to charge PSP via a USB charging cable. This feature may not be the preferred charging option for many, but this option has got it’s advantages. Note: not all USB cables are the same.
They allow the user to charge their system by connecting to an acceptable external device, or a system that allows a USB connection to the PSP system. Suitable operating systems that support mass USB storage, such as a PC with Windows XP or Mac OS. Other suitable systems may include HDD recorders, the PlayStation 3 gaming console and laptops.
The USB charging option is advantageous if your systems AC charger has suddenly stopped working, or you may be at a friends and your charger is at home and you have access to a PC. If you are on along trip with a fully charged laptop, you can charge your system via the laptop.

To Charge PSP via a USB Charging Cable.
*1 – Turn your PlayStation Portable ON.
*2 – Go to “Settings”.
*3 – In the settings options go to “System Settings”.
*4 – In the System Settings, select “USB Charge” and press the button.
*5 – Choose ON and press the button to enable USB charging. If at any time you wish to disable USB charging, select OFF and press the button.
*6 – Now plug in the USB charging cable to your PSP, and the other end to your PC, laptop or other suitable USB device.
*7 – Go to Settings and choose “USB Connection”, press the button to place the system into USB charging mode. You now may notice a sound and the power indicator light will turn orange. Your system will now be starting to charge.
When using the USB charging option you may notice that the auto sleep feature may not work.
Can all PlayStation Portables Charge via a USB Connection ?.
Unfortunately not all models can be charged using this method. The original 1000 model (phat) can not be charged by a USB connection. The 2000 (slim & lite), 3000 and the new PSP Go and PS Vita can accept a charge via USB.
Can a PSP be Charged via USB with a Flat Battery ?.
The PSP battery has to have some battery power remaining in the battery to use this feature. You must be able to turn your system on, that you can choose this option when going through your system settings. Always remember to charge your system before your battery runs flat. The new PS Vita is the only system that can be charged with a flat battery, the system has to be completely powered OFF to accept a charge via USB.
